Search Functions in the Password Boss WebApp

The Password Boss WebApp introduces an improved search experience designed to make finding items faster and more intuitive. This update includes two distinct search modes—Default and Global—along with clearer behavior for special sections such as Shares, Emergency Access (EA), and Vaults.

Below is a complete breakdown of how the updated search bar works, what’s changed, and how to use each mode effectively.

Default Search

What Default Search Does

Default Search now focuses strictly on the items visible on the current screen. This mode is optimized for speed and clarity by narrowing results to what the user is actively viewing.

Key Behaviors

  • Searches only in the active view (e.g., Passwords, Notes, Payment Cards).
  • Matches only items currently visible—filters and sorting apply.
  • Provides a cleaner, more predictable search experience when navigating within a category.

Visual Example

Global Search

What Global Search Does

Global Search expands the search scope to behave more like the legacy system—searching the full vault and displaying results grouped by section.

Key Improvements

  • Searches your entire vault, regardless of view or filtering.
  • Results are grouped using the new, more precise section logic.
  • Returns broader matches ideal for users with large vaults or complex structures.

How to Enable Global Search

Click the globe icon in the search bar.

Sections That Always Use Default Search

Shares, Emergency Access (EA), and Vaults

These areas always use the Default Search behavior—even when Global Search is enabled.

This ensures:

  • Accurate permission-based visibility
  • Predictable results for shared items
  • Consistent search rules for secure, trust‑sensitive areas

Quick Comparison

Default Search

  • Scoped to current view
  • Searches visible items only
  • Fastest response time

Global Search

  • Searches entire vault
  • Section‑grouped results
  • Best for broad or complex searches

How to Use the Updated Search Bar

Switching Modes

  • Default mode = no globe icon selected
  • Global mode = globe icon highlighted

Best Practices

  • Use Default to filter what you see now quickly
  • Use Global when searching across all categories
  • Expect Shares, EA, Vaults to always search locally
