Password Boss can automatically save new website passwords when you sign in. If a site doesn’t trigger a save prompt, you can save the password manually. This guide covers both methods across all platforms, including advanced cases (multi‑page logins, SSO, and duplicate detection).

How Password Boss Saves New Passwords

Automatic Detection

Password Boss monitors standard login forms and prompts you to Save Password when you sign in for the first time, change a password, or sign in on a new device/browser. You can edit the item (name, folder, tags) before saving.

Supported Browsers

For automatic capture, ensure the Password Boss extension or autofill service is active on Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Safari (iOS), and Android (Autofill Service). If your browser isn’t supported, use the manual save steps below.

Saving New Website Passwords on Desktop (Windows & Mac)

Automatic Capture

  1. Ensure the Password Boss browser extension is installed and you’re logged in.
  2. Sign in to a website.
  3. When the save banner appears in your browser, select Save.
  4. Adjust the name, folder, or color if needed.

Manual Save

  1. Open the desktop app.
  2. Select Add New Password.
  3. Enter the login details and website URL.
  4. Assign any folders or tags.
  5. Save the item.

Saving New Website Passwords on iOS

Automatic Save (via Autofill)

  1. Enable Password Boss under Settings → Passwords → AutoFill Passwords.
  2. Open Safari or your preferred browser.
  3. Sign in to the website.
  4. When prompted, tap Save Password.

Manual Save

  1. Open the Password Boss app.
  2. Tap Add Item → Password.
  3. Enter the details and save.

Saving New Website Passwords on Android

Automatic Save (via Autofill Service)

  1. Ensure Password Boss is set as your Autofill Service.
  2. Sign in to a website in Chrome or another supported browser.
  3. Tap Save when prompted.

Manual Save

  1. Open the Password Boss app.
  2. Tap Add Item → Password.
  3. Enter your login and website information.
  4. Save the item.

Editing Details Before Saving

Item Name

Use a clear name such as:

  • “Amazon – Personal”
  • “Google Workspace – Admin Login”

Folders

Organize passwords into folders like:

  • Work
  • Personal
  • Clients
  • Finance

Tags

Use tags for flexible filtering:

  • #ClientA
  • #Shopping
  • #Banking

Advanced Scenarios

Two‑Page Logins (Username → Password)

Some sites split username and password across separate pages. If the prompt does not appear:

  • Ensure the extension is active and you’re signed in.
  • Complete both steps, then try signing out/in again to trigger a prompt.
  • Save manually if needed.

Single Sign‑On (SSO) and Identity Providers

SSO flows (e.g., “Sign in with Microsoft/Google”) may skip standard password fields.

  • Save the tenant portal or IdP account if a site uses SSO exclusively.
  • For mixed sites (local login + SSO), capture the local login or save manually.

Multi‑Account on the Same Site

When multiple accounts exist for one domain (e.g., work and personal):

  • Create separate password items with clear names and tags.
  • Verify URL fields so autofill chooses the right item.

Password Change Flows

If you change a password on a site, Password Boss will typically prompt to Update:

  • Use Update Existing to keep history intact (see Password & Note History).
  • If you must keep both (old and new), Save as New and rename accordingly.

Private/Incognito Windows

Extensions may be disabled in private windows by default.

  • Enable the Password Boss extension for private browsing in your browser settings, or save manually.

If You Don’t See a Save Prompt

Quick Checks

  • Confirm the browser extension/autofill is installed and active.
  • Ensure you’re signed in to Password Boss in the extension/app.
  • Check browser permissions (extension allowed on the site).
  • Try a non‑private window for the first capture.

Manual Save

Use Add New → Password to save credentials directly if prompts don’t appear.

Troubleshooting Password Saving

Duplicate Warning

If Password Boss detects a similar login, you’ll be prompted to update or create new:

  • Update Existing if it’s the same account.
  • Create New if it’s a distinct account (different username or environment).

Autofill Picks the Wrong Item

  • Open the item and verify the Website URL (use the canonical login URL, not a post‑login page).
  • Remove stale duplicates or rename clearly.
  • Add distinguishing tags (e.g., #Prod, #Test).

Sites That Block Autofill

Some banking or government sites intentionally disable autofill fields.

  • Save manually with the correct URL and then copy/paste credentials from Password Boss.
  • Consider browser‑specific compatibility settings or alternate browsers if permitted.

Security and Sync

Encryption

All saved passwords are encrypted and accessible only with your Master Password.

Multi‑Device Sync

Newly saved items sync across WebApp, Desktop, iOS, and Android when you sign in.

Best Practices

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Leverage a password generator and avoid reuse.

Keep Data Clean

Periodically review logins, remove deprecated accounts, and consolidate duplicates.

Combine Organization Tools

Use Folders, Tags, Custom Views, and Color Labels together to find items fast.
