Learn how to quickly and easily uninstall browser extension from your computer.
Table of Contents
Browser Buttons let Password Boss fill passwords, save new logins, and streamline autofill across your favorite websites. If you no longer need these extensions—or are troubleshooting unexpected browser behavior—you can uninstall the Browser Buttons at any time. This guide walks you through removing the extension on every supported platform and provides best practices, troubleshooting guidance, and security considerations.
What Browser Buttons Are
Browser Buttons are lightweight extensions for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other supported browsers. They enable:
- Automatic login detection and saving
- Autofill for usernames, passwords, and form data
- Quick access to your Password Boss vault directly from the browser
- Secure communication between the browser and the Password Boss Desktop App (if installed)
Removing a Browser Button disables these features for that browser only and does not delete your Password Boss data.
Platform-Specific Steps
WebApp
The WebApp does not install extensions. If you see prompts about Browser Buttons, they originate from your browser—not the WebApp.
Desktop App (Windows & macOS)
The Desktop App does not control the Browser Button installation. Uninstall the Browser Button directly from your browser.
If the Desktop App cannot connect to the Browser Button after uninstalling:
- Close and reopen the Desktop App
- Quit and relaunch your browser
- Confirm no older version of the extension remains installed under “Manage Extensions”
Chrome
Uninstalling the Browser Button
- Open Chrome.
- Select ⋮ (Menu) > Extensions > Manage Extensions.
- Locate Password Boss.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm by selecting Remove again.
Tip
If Chrome sync is enabled, ensure the removal syncs to your other Chrome profiles or devices.
Edge
Uninstalling the Browser Button
- Open Edge.
- Select ⋯ (Menu) > Extensions.
- Choose Manage Extensions.
- Find Password Boss.
- Click Remove > Remove.
Note
If using corporate-managed Edge settings, Extension removal may be restricted by policy.
Firefox
Uninstalling the Browser Button
- Open Firefox.
- Click ≡ (Menu) > Add-ons and Themes.
- Select Extensions.
- Locate Password Boss.
- Click the three‑dot menu next to it.
- Choose Remove.
Safari (macOS)
Uninstalling the Browser Button
Safari extensions are managed through macOS.
- Open Safari.
- Select Safari > Settings (or Preferences, depending on macOS version).
- Open the Extensions tab.
- Select Password Boss.
- Uncheck the box or click Uninstall if available.
Important: Some Safari extensions require removing the underlying application from Applications > Password Boss to complete uninstall.
iOS & Android
Browser Buttons are not used on mobile browsers.
Mobile autofill uses:
- iOS Password AutoFill
- Android Autofill Service
To disable autofill:
- iOS: Settings > Passwords > Password Options > disable Password Boss
- Android: Settings > System > Autofill > change your autofill provider
Advanced Use Cases
Removing the Extension for Troubleshooting
You may uninstall the Browser Button to resolve:
- Autofill not triggering
- Extension stuck on “Connecting…”
- Conflicts during updates
- Browser performance issues
After uninstalling:
- Restart the browser
- Reinstall the latest Browser Button from the Password Boss website or browser store
Using Multiple Browsers
Each browser manages its own Browser Button.
If you use Chrome and Firefox, uninstalling in Chrome does not affect Firefox.
Best Practices
- Remove unused extensions to reduce clutter and attack surface.
- If upgrading Password Boss Desktop, reinstall the Browser Button to ensure proper pairing.
- For shared workstations, clear the browser’s extension sync settings to avoid reinstallation.
- Use only the official extension from the Chrome Web Store / Edge Add-ons / Firefox Add-ons.
Troubleshooting
The extension keeps reinstalling itself
- Browser sync may be re‑adding it.
- Chrome:
chrome://settings/syncSetup→ Turn off extension sync. - Edge: Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Chrome:
The extension cannot be removed
- You may be on a managed device.
- Extension may have a corporate policy enforcing installation.
- Check “Managed by your organization” notices in browser settings.
- Contact your IT admin if applicable (CyberFOX internal devices often use managed extension policies).
Autofill stopped working after uninstall
Removing the extension disables:
- Website password capture
- Auto-fill suggestions
- One‑click password generator
Use the WebApp or Desktop App directly to manage passwords.
Browser Button still shows after removal
Try:
- Restarting the browser
- Clearing cached extension data
- Removing duplicate profiles
- Rebooting the device
Security & Sync Behavior
- Removing the Browser Button does not delete your vault or stored passwords.
- Syncing across devices continues through the Password Boss cloud service.
- Browser Buttons do not store passwords locally; they securely request data from the app or cloud session.
- Enterprise environments may enforce security controls requiring or blocking extension use.
