What Are Passkeys? General Limitations & Best Practices Troubleshooting

What Are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern, phishing-resistant sign-in method based on FIDO2/WebAuthn. Instead of entering a password, you authenticate using a cryptographic key pair stored securely on your device, which is verified by biometrics or a PIN. Passkeys are designed to be easier and more secure than traditional passwords.

General Limitations & Best Practices

  • Passkeys are site-specific and cannot be used across different domains (e.g., Amazon.com vs. Amazon.de).
  • If a passkey is deleted from the website or app, you must also remove it from Password Boss to avoid failed sign-in attempts.
  • Username mismatches between the passkey and the site/app will prevent authentication.
  • Only the website or app can initiate the passkey login process; Password Boss cannot trigger it independently.

Key Advantages of Password Boss with Passkeys:

  • Unified passkey management across platforms and browsers.
  • Enterprise-grade admin controls, audit logs, and recovery workflows.
  • Ability to edit passkey details and manage multiple passkeys per site (where supported).
  • In-app troubleshooting and customer support.

Web Passkey Guide

Getting Started

You don’t need to perform any special setup to use Passkeys with Password Boss Web. The feature is available by default.

How to Add a Passkey

Go to Access Settings:

  • Open the website settings in Password Boss Web or the browser extension.

Add Passkey:

  • Click “Add Passkey” (or similar).
  • You’ll be prompted to name the new passkey and select a folder for storage.
  • Confirm the creation.
  • The passkey will appear in the same section once added.
  • You’ll see a confirmation message indicating successful addition.

After Adding:

  • The passkey should appear in the same section.
  • A message will likely appear stating that the passkey has been successfully added.

Device Limitations:

  • Some websites do not allow you to create more than one passkey on a single device. Your account is considered a single device by the website. A corresponding message may be displayed.

Using Passkeys:

  • On your next visit, if a passkey has already been added for your user, the website will offer to use the previously added passkey. The extension will display a list of passkey items for the current website.

Limitations

  • The Password Boss extension or web app cannot initiate the login process using Passkey; only the website can request a list of existing Passkeys using standard means.
  • Passkey items will not be suggested when you click on the owl icon in the username or password field.
  • If a passkey has been deleted by the user from the website, neither the Password Boss extension nor the web app can determine this and will continue to offer this passkey when logging in.
  • Not all sites clearly inform the user that a previously deleted passkey is being used by the Password Boss extension.
  • Passkeys can only be used on the same website where they were previously added. For example, a passkey added to Amazon.com cannot be used on Amazon.de or Amazon.es.

iOS Passkey Guide

Overview

Passkeys are supported for Password Boss WebApp users on iOS 17 and later. They provide a secure, passwordless sign-in experience using Face ID, Touch ID, or device PIN, and are managed directly within the Password Boss app.

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Enable Passkeys in iOS Settings

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to General → AutoFill & Passwords.
  • Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.
  • Select PasswordBoss as your provider.
  • The subtitle should display “Passwords and Passkeys.”

2. Register a Passkey

  • Open any app or website that supports Passkeys.
  • Navigate to the registration section (usually under Account or Settings).
  • Select Create/Register Passkey.
  • An iOS popup titled “Create Passkey?” appears, showing the PasswordBoss logo and your email.
  • Tap Continue to open the PasswordBoss credential provider.
  • Authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Choose to create a new item or update an existing one if a Passkey for that site already exists.
  • Tap Save to complete registration. The app or website will confirm creation.

3. Autofill Sign-In

  • Tap Sign In or Authenticate on the app or website.
  • A system popup shows the site URL and username.
  • Tap Continue to open PasswordBoss and authenticate biometrically.
  • Sign-in completes automatically.

4. Select a Passkey for Sign-In

  • Tap Other Sign-In Options below the Continue button.
  • Recent Passkeys: Shows recently saved Passkeys for the site/app.
  • Other Options: Lets you open PasswordBoss to access additional Passkeys.
  • Authenticate with biometrics, then select the Passkey to use.
  • Note: The username on the app/site must match the Passkey username, or sign-in will fail.

5. Edit or Remove a Passkey

  • Preview shows username and creation date.
  • Tap Edit to update profile, folder, URL, name, username, or password.
  • Note: Changing the username may cause authentication to fail.
  • To remove a Passkey, tap the trash icon and confirm deletion.

Important Notes & Limitations

  • If you remove Passkeys from an app or website, you must also delete them from the PasswordBoss app. Otherwise, iOS may still suggest signing in with a removed Passkey, resulting in failed attempts and error messages.
  • Passkeys are only available for PB6 users on iOS 17 and later.
  • Username mismatches between the app/site and Passkey will prevent sign-in.
